Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks deserved better. This story tells the story of how they meet at the end of GoF, getting to know one another and dating in OOTP, their separation through HBP, and then marriage and beyond with DH. Mostly canon compliant, some minor OC characters. I have my own conception of werewolf mating that’s less romantic/closer to biological wolf mating. Some smut, a good bit of angst, and of course features BAMF Remus and Tonks as individuals as well as a pairing. Other notes – characters obviously don’t belong to me, they belong to JK Rowling, not making money off this, literally for my own enjoyment and for others’ enjoyment.

Chapter 1: Uprising
A warm, cloudy June evening found Remus Lupin laying on his threadbare bed, exhausted. Though it had been over a week since he transformed back from his werewolf state, he felt a throbbing in his side; the broken ribs appeared to be the main culprit. As usual, he had healed himself of the worst of his self-inflicted injuries just after his transformation, but some wounds took time. He sighed with a grimace, vaguely remembering the previous transformation¡¯s frustrating confinement. After a few swigs of healing potions, he began to feel slightly better. His dilapidated cottage near the Muggle shore community in Yorkshire was as fine a place as any to keep a highly enchanted, guarded cellar in which he completed his monthly transformations. He felt safer there; very few Muggles ventured anywhere near the place, calling it haunted. It reminded him of a previous life. He chuckled to himself, with some pain, ¡°Better another Shrieking Shack than more of my kind.¡±Remus had spent the better part of the last year employed at a local Muggle shop, selling shoes. The work was well beneath his capabilities as a wizard but the Muggles who employed him were kind and asked few questions about his monthly required days off, due to an unnamed ¡°illness.¡± He earned enough to cover his basic expenses, but not nearly enough to cover the expensive ingredients he would need for Wolfsbane Potion, the only solution that made his monthly transformation somewhat bearable. Instead, he told the kind Muggles that he suffered a rare health condition that rendered him out-of-service for a few days each month. The Muggles were curious, but as he was a kind, respectful, and unusually talented shoe salesman, they permitted his monthly absences. The last year had been unkind to Lupin. He had been briefly employed as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Albus Dumbledore had kindly offered him the role, but at the close of the school year, a disgruntled Severus Snape had ¡°accidentally¡± revealed his lycanthropy. Lupin thought better of continuing at Hogwarts, and resigned before any Hogwarts parents could object to his employment. Lupin would always be grateful to Dumbledore for the chances the headmaster gave him, though he never felt he deserved those chances.Remus glanced at a piece of worn parchment at his bedside; Sirius Black¡¯s scrawled handwriting read:
Harry¡¯s last task is approaching. I had wanted to help but he felt it was unsafe for me to?be around Hogsmeade as Padfoot. I miss James. Wish you were here.
Remus sighed, and muttered, ¡°At least Harry¡¯s got some of Lily¡¯s common sense.¡±Remus felt pity for his last remaining boyhood best friend. He knew what it felt like to be on the edge of society, rejected and unwanted by those around him. Nevertheless, he agreed with Harry¡¯s judgment. Despite Sirius¡¯ loneliness, his support of Harry in such precarious times would lead to more suffering for Sirius. The last task. This reminded Remus of the events he had been following in the Wizarding world. He had been following, with much trepidation, the events at Hogwarts. Harry Potter had unwillingly been entered into the Triwizard Tournament, an inter-scholastic, magical competition, as the fourth champion. Somehow, despite the many protections Dumbledore afforded the school, Harry¡¯s name had been entered into the Goblet of Fire.Lupin had rejoiced that Harry had made it past the first two tasks – getting past a dragon and rescuing friends from the Black Lake – but the third task was scheduled for that very evening. It was already well underway, he thought, clutching his side as he rolled off the bed to make a cup of tea. He staggered towards the rusted stove to prepare a kettle for tea.Without warning, a ball of blue light illuminated the shabby cottage. The light materialized further, until it took the shape of a phoenix. In a voice he immediately knew was Dumbledore¡¯s, the Patronus spoke: ¡°Voldemort has returned. Harry is safe. Await further instructions.¡±The Patronus dissolved, plunging the cottage back into near-darkness. Lupin nearly fell over, thoughts racing. ¡°How could Voldemort be back?¡± he thought to himself.¡°Harry¡¯s safe.¡± Those words gave him some comfort. His best friends¡¯ son was safe, he thought, for now.?¡.?Within hours, Remus heard a loud crack! several yards from his cottage. Wand held high, he glanced through a broken shutter and saw the familiar figure of Arthur Weasley gazing at his worn-down cottage.¡°Remus!¡± he called.¡°Is it true?¡± Remus replied.¡°Yes, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is back,¡± Arthur admitted. ¡°He killed the other Hogwarts champion before getting his body back, and Harry made it out alive.¡±Remus clutched his still-painful side, and said, ¡°What now?¡±Arthur said, ¡°We fight. We are at war again.¡±Remus looked down at his worn clothes and pitiful lodgings. He had become accustomed to a transient life, but no amount of creaturely comforts could hold him back from returning to the only fight he felt worth fighting: the battle against Voldemort.Remus stated, ¡°I¡¯m in. How can I help?¡±Arthur looked over his shoulder, and whispered, ¡°The Order of the Phoenix is back. We have new headquarters – Sirius has offered his place in London. When you¡¯ve gathered what you have, Apparate to Grimmauld Place in London. You¡¯ll meet one of us there.¡±Remus nodded. Arthur said, ¡°I¡¯ve got others to inform. Dumbledore is managing a¡situation¡at Hogwarts.¡±Remus¡¯ eyebrows raised at Arthur¡¯s hesitation. Noting the surprised look, Arthur explained, ¡°We¡¯re not sure what happened, but it¡¯s got something to do with Mad-Eye Moody. I¡¯m sure we¡¯ll know soon.¡±With that, Arthur Disapparated into the early morning light, leaving Lupin with his thoughts.Within minutes, Remus had packed the last of his belongings from his meagre life at the cottage. He briefly thought of the Muggle shop owners who employed him and thought to pen them a letter offering his resignation due to his health. He felt badly for abandoning them and their kindness, but he had a greater duty ahead of him. He wrote a brief letter and dropped it off on his way out of the village. With a backward glance at the semblance of a normal life that he had had in the last year, he Disapparated to Grimmauld Place in London.Remus had arrived in a Muggle street and felt eyes upon him. A large, shaggy dog jumped to greet him. The dog¡¯s paws pressed into his sore side, and Lupin winced and muttered, ¡°I would¡¯ve thought you¡¯d remembered how I feel after a full moon, Padfoot.¡±The dog backed down and nuzzled a piece of parchment into Lupin¡¯s hand. Lupin unfolded the parchment and found, in neat and familiar, loopy handwriting, the following words:¡°The headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix can be found at 12 Grimmauld Place, London.¡±Remus looked up from the note as the dog grabbed it from his hand and tore it to shreds with his teeth. Simultaneously, as if from nowhere, a building appeared between 11 and 13 Grimmauld Place. Number 12, Lupin thought, had once been handsome like its neighbors, with? its stone facade. It looked unkempt and forgotten, but now that he had laid his eyes upon it, the dog was leading the way up the stoop stairs to the front door.Remus followed the dog to the front step. The dog looked around and quickly transformed to a thin, pale man with tangled, shoulder-length black hair. Lupin hissed, ¡°Someone will see you!¡±The pale man laughed, saying, ¡°Not from this step, Moony. Just wait.¡±At this, the pale man tapped his wand against the front door, which lacked a doorknob. Within seconds, the door¡¯s many locks clicked and slowly opened to reveal a dusty, dark corridor.¡°My family¡¯s old home,¡± said Sirius, bitterly. ¡°The Black family residence.¡±Remus was flustered. In his many years of friendship with Sirius, he had never ventured into Sirius¡¯ boyhood home. Sirius had run away from home in his later Hogwarts years. It seemed odd to see Sirius so out of his element in this once-handsome home.¡°It¡¯s about the only useful thing I can do for the Order,¡± Sirius admitted. ¡°I hate everything about this place, but I s¡¯pose it¡¯s got its uses.¡±An ancient house-elf looked up at Sirius from a dark corner of the corridor and bowed deeply. ¡°Master has brought darkness upon the house again, oh how my mistress would howl over the blood traitors and the half-breed and beast.¡±?¡°That¡¯s enough, Kreacher!¡± barked Sirius. ¡°He¡¯s a slimy little git,¡± he explained to Sirius, ¡°but I can¡¯t free him because he knows too much, the dodgy little shit.¡±?Remus nodded, and followed Sirius down a flight of dingy stairs to the basement. The stairs led to a grimy kitchen filled with familiar, anxiety-stricken faces. A bright fire illuminated the filthy place.¡°Remus, at last!¡± Molly Weasley exclaimed. ¡°You¡¯re looking a bit peaky,¡± she said, frowning slightly. ¡°I¡¯ll get you something to eat.¡±¡°Thanks,¡± Remus replied, feeling slightly abashed. He hoped that he hadn¡¯t been the only person she¡¯d offered sustenance to; he never liked being anyone¡¯s charity case. Sirius drew close to Remus, and muttered, ¡°She¡¯s like that with everyone.¡±A loud screeching was heard in the basement and everyone jumped. Sirius sprinted back up the stairs, hissing, ¡°Old hag!¡±Arthur explained, ¡°Sirius¡¯ mother has a rather unpleasant portrait of herself near the stairs. We¡¯ll be trying to take care of it while we¡¯re here.¡±Meanwhile, Molly quickly turned around and offered Remus both butterbeer and a warm loaf out of the oven. He mumbled thanks to Molly, suddenly thankful and hunger for warm food after another exhausting full moon.?As Lupin munched on the loaf, he looked around the basement kitchen. Kingsley Shacklebolt, Arthur Weasley, Dedalus Diggle, Rubeus Hagrid, and a few unfamiliar redheads sat tensely.¡°We¡¯re waiting for a few others, Remus,¡± said Arthur. ¡°You might not know my eldest sons – that¡¯s Bill, on the end, with the long hair – ¡°Molly scowled in Bill¡¯s direction, in apparent disapproval of her son¡¯s hairstyle.¡° – and next to him, with the angry welts, is my second eldest, Charlie,¡± Arthur continued.¡°Pleased to meet you both,¡± replied Remus. ¡°I had the pleasure of teaching your youngest brothers and sister last year at Hogwarts.¡±Charlie snorted into his own butterbeer choking out, ¡°I¡¯m sure Fred and George were pleasures, all right.¡±Molly gave Charlie an exasperated look, saying, ¡°You¡¯d best watch your tongue when they get here. They¡¯ll be an unpleasant lot when they realize they won¡¯t be able to join. As soon as their exams are over, they¡¯re arriving here.¡±¡°Who else are we waiting for, Dad?¡± asked Bill.Arthur looked over his glasses, rubbing his temples with his fingers. He said, ¡°We expect a cohort from Hogwarts any moment now, not including Alastor. Dumbledore¡¯ll fill him in later. Alastor¡¯s sending his youngest prot¨¦g¨¦e along in his place. She¡¯ll be joining the order too.¡±¡°Do you know who the prot¨¦g¨¦e is, Kingsley?¡± squeaked Dedalus Diggle. ¡°Can she be trusted?¡±Kingsley¡¯s deep voice replied, ¡°She can be trusted. Dumbledore trusts her, so I trust her. I haven¡¯t worked with her personally, but I¡¯m told she¡¯s an excellent Auror. A little…spirited…but excellent at what she does.¡±Diggle settled into his seat, apparently content with this assessment. Moments later, the fire in the kitchen blazed green and several figures appeared in quick succession: Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, a young woman with bright fuchsia-colored hair, and finally, Albus Dumbledore. At the sight of Dumbledore, the whole room breathed a collective sigh of relief. Snape and McGonagall looked pale and exhausted, and took places near Bill and Charlie. The fuchsia-haired woman tightly hugged Bill and Charlie upon seeing them, and sat in between the young men, knocking over several glasses on the table in the process, causing Bill and Charlie to burst out into laughter and several rounds of Reparo! to fix the broken glasses. Snape gave Remus a snide look before he sat down. ¡°Old habits die hard,¡± Remus thought. Despite all of Remus¡¯ attempts to be kind to Snape in adulthood, it seemed as though Snape would never forgive his sin of friendship with his tormentors, Sirius Black, and James Potter. At the very least, Remus felt that there was only one person in the room who hated him, and it had (almost) nothing to do with his affliction.?¡°Now that we are all gathered,¡± began Dumbledore, ¡°we must begin with-¡°¡°Wotcher, Sirius!¡± the fuchsia-haired woman cried upon seeing a figure appear from the stairs. She got up immediately, and, knocking over a few chairs, embraced Sirius.¡°I can¡¯t believe it¡¯s you! I haven¡¯t seen you in ages!¡± she said, excitedly.Sirius replied jokingly, ¡°Yes, I was¡busy. It¡¯s nice to see another member of my family who isn¡¯t homicidal.¡±Snape cleared his throat and interjected, ¡°As touching as this reunion may be, I believe we have more serious matters to attend to.¡±The young woman lowered her gaze and clumsily righted the chairs she had toppled in her excitement. Sirius sat next to Remus, who was gazing at the young woman himself, curious about her connection with Sirius. Remus couldn¡¯t help but think she was a bit young for Sirius, but Sirius¡¯ handsome looks and boyish demeanor had attracted many a young woman before. This young woman was rather charming, he thought, and Sirius or some other handsome wizard would be charming her in return. Lupin felt a bit bitter about this, but remembered it was for the best.Dumbledore¡¯s voice broke Lupin¡¯s reverie. He said, ¡°Voldemort has returned, and so have his followers, the Death Eaters.¡± He continued, ¡°Harry Potter is in grave danger. Arrangements will be made later this summer to bring him to Grimmauld Place. I suspect some of you will assist in his safe transport from his relatives¡¯ home to headquarters.¡± Many nods followed this pronouncement.Dumbledore then described the events of the previous evening at the third task. Shocked, startled faces returned to their anxiety-stricken ones as he recounted Voldemort¡¯s gruesome return through Harry¡¯s own blood and the death of another Hogwarts student at Voldemort¡¯s hands. He recounted the trials of Alastor, ¡°Mad-Eye,¡± Moody, and his impersonation by a Death Eater through the use of Polyjuice Potion. The fuchsia-haired woman gasped audibly at this; Lupin remembered that she had been Moody¡¯s last trainee. Dumbledore concluded his report by simply saying, ¡°There is much work to be done.¡±Arthur¡¯s voice broke the silence. He asked, ¡°What can we do, Albus?¡±Dumbledore began, ¡°12 Grimmauld Place is our headquarters. We will meet here as often as we can to discuss next steps. Those of us at Hogwarts – Minerva, Severus, Rubeus, and myself – will work to protect Harry and his fellow students from Voldemort. Those outside Hogwarts will be sent on missions to spy on suspected or known Death Eaters and gather as much information as we can about Voldemort¡¯s whereabouts and plans. I suspect that Voldemort is after something¡something that I believe he thinks will help him defeat Harry Potter.¡±Nearly everyone in the room straightened up at this. ¡°What could that possibly be, Albus?¡± asked Minerva. Snape shifted uncomfortably next to her; Remus noticed a shimmer of guilt in his expression.Dumbledore explained, ¡°A prophecy was made nearly sixteen years ago regarding Voldemort and Harry. The prophecy, in Voldemort¡¯s mind, holds knowledge that will help him defeat Harry Potter. The prophecy is stored in the Department of Mysteries at the Ministry of Magic. I believe that Voldemort will try, with the help of his Death Eaters, to retrieve the prophecy. We must not allow this to happen.¡±¡°Does the prophecy truly contain this information?¡± asked Sirius.Dumbledore hesitated. Snape shifted uncomfortably again. Dumbledore said, ¡°Perhaps. It is better for the prophecy to never be heard again. For this reason, we must do what we can to protect it – and Harry – from Voldemort¡¯s grasp.¡±Dumbledore continued, ¡°Alastor will take the reins on the day-to-day operations, once he is healed from his ordeal. I, Severus, Minerva, and Rubeus will return to Hogwarts to begin protecting it from Death Eaters and the like. I suspect we will not have the Ministry¡¯s support in our endeavors. Cornelius Fudge does not want the publicity or impression that Voldemort has returned. Those of you who work for the Ministry – Kingsley, Arthur, and Nymphadora – will be under scrutiny if you are not careful.¡±¡°Nymphadora,¡± Remus thought, ¡°that must be the young woman.¡± At the sound of her name, Remus had noticed Nymphadora flinch.Dumbledore went on, ¡°Based on what Harry saw, I suspect that Voldemort will be recruiting aggressively. We must discover who – and why – he has recruited those individuals.¡± He paused, and said, ¡°If possible, we must try to warn as many as we can that Voldemort has truly returned, and that we are all in grave danger.¡±He pulled out a piece of parchment, and gave it to Kingsley, saying, ¡°This is the list of Death Eaters that Harry saw at Voldemort¡¯s return. I suggest we begin by spying on these individuals to monitor their activities. For now, those of us from Hogwarts will return to our duties. Kingsley, Arthur – when Alastor arrives, he can take over the spying activities. I¡¯ll need you both for the Ministry. Dedalus – you will be best suited to communications. Do what you can to inform the Magical community of the dangers at hand.¡±Kingsley and Arthur both nodded, as Dumbledore crossed back towards the fireplace. Snape, McGonagall, and Hagrid followed, and each disappeared in the green flames to return to Hogwarts. Dedalus followed the others, but shouted ¡°Diagon Alley!¡± in the flames before disappearing for his mission.
