Notes:

hello! thank you very much for stopping by! this is my first ever fanfic in english, so please, feel free to point out any mistakes or misspellings.before we start, i just want to make it very clear thay i am in no way a lawyer and this story isn’t based upon the legal aspect of regulus’ story. if anyone is actually familiar with how the laws and criminal processes in england works, bare in mind this story is not meant to be legally accurate and it’s not even a big part of the fic.i hope you enjoy!

Chapter 1

Chapter Text
James Fleamont Potter is a busy man, thank you very much. He’s a successful writer, a devoted father, and a terrible, horrible gardener, but hey, it’s not his fault rose bushes have the rather rude habit of dying at the very touch of his fingers.Well, maybe he does have a little bit of spare time in his hands, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to use that spare time collecting newspaper clippings of his ex-boyfriend’s trial in an old uni binder.Except he does.It started with him collecting the newspapers, actually, but when the pile next to his bed became too obvious and Sirius started asking questions, James decided it was time to throw it all out.The thing is, he couldn’t quite bring himself to, so he kept only the pages in which Regulus was featured, which was most of them.He was the heir of the Black Empire, after all; the young, handsome, poised heir of the Black Empire, and the media wasn’t shy when it came to milking that fact for all it was worth.James kept Sirius’ pages, as well, because he is a good friend. But then the pages were piling up and getting damaged, and when he saw Harry drawing black and green flowers around the heading ‘REGULUS BLACK FACING UP TO TWENTY YEARS BEHIND BARS FOR EMBEZLEMENT AND MONEY LAUNDERING’, he knew it was time to move them somewhere else.Practicality, that is, because he is a writer and he likes to collect information.“Is that what you tell yourself to make yourself feel better?” Remus scoffs at him. “Honestly, Jim, that’s depressing.”“It’s not depressing,” he says, matter-of-factly. “It’s—”“Very, very sad?” Remus suggests.James sighs, sinking further into the couch. “Maybe a little.”Remus gives him a pitiful smile from behind his cup of coffee, and settles it back empty on the coffee table between them.“Listen,” he breathes out. “I understand what he meant to you, mate. I really do. But reading the papers is hurting you. And it’s enough that you have to listen to Sirius rant about the case every single time you see him for you to then come home and see this shit. Especially now.”He points out at one picture that shows a handcuffed Regulus walking up the stairs of the courthouse, escorted by five armed policemen, with his lawyer and Sirius following closely behind. It read ‘SIRIUS BLACK ACCOMPANYING HIS BROTHER REGULUS BLACK ON HIS SENTENCING HEARING.’ in bold, black lettering.James shivers.“Well,” he says, quietly, “it’s over, isn’t it? They sentence him today. No more newspaper clippings for me, mate.”He means it as a joke, but it comes out a bitter statement. And Remus doesn’t have it in him to be assertive anymore, it seems, because he sulks in himself and pushes the newspaper away.“I don’t know what this feels like for you,” he tells James, golden eyes shining with concern, “but I’m here whenever you need me. Regulus was your first love, and it’s okay if you—”“My only love,” James corrects for him, and a sad smile crosses his lips. “I’ve never loved anyone like I loved him, Moony. I didn’t think seeing him like this was going to be so hard, but it is. One day we’re hiding beneath Peter’s bed, trying not to laugh, and the next he’s pleading guilty to money laundering. It’s shit. And I can’t help but wonder if I could’ve done something to prevent this.”It takes Remus a few seconds to speak again, but when he does, he looks at James like he wants to do something to make everything better, but he can’t.“We aren’t kids anymore, Jim,” he whispers. “Sirius made his choice when he left his family, and Regulus could’ve done the same, but he didn’t. He chose to stay. Neither you nor Sirius are to blame for that.”James doesn’t say anything.Remus is right, he knows that, but he also knows Regulus could have done so much if he had only gone with James that night. He is only twenty three, two years out of university, and facing the possibility of spending the rest of his youth behind bars. And God only knows what the rest of the convicts could possibly do to someone like Regulus.James shakes his head to stop himself from thinking about it.Before he can say anything else, his phone rings and Peter’s name glows on the screen. He answers in a heartbeat.“Mate, put on the news,” Peter says. “Now!”James doesn’t know who hangs up first, if Peter or him, but Remus is reaching for the remote and turning on the telly.Thankfully, James fell asleep last night listening to the news channel, so it’s already on when the screen lights up, and it doesn’t take them long before they realize what’s going on.The live footage shows Regulus being pulled into a police car and Sirius yelling at his lawyer right beside it, having to be held back by a policeman so he doesn’t break the man’s nose right then and there.James sucks in a sharp breath when she sees the white letters on a red background.“Shit,” Remus whispers.‘REGULUS BLACK SENTENCED TO SERVE ONE YEAR AND EIGHT MONTHS BEHIND BARS IN AZKABAN FOR WHITE COLLAR CRIMES.’They keep watching as a reporter approaches a very distressed looking Sirius and all but shoves the microphone in his face, asking him in a cheerful voice to comment on his stance regarding his brother’s status.Sirius doesn’t even look at the camera when he hisses, “this isn’t over.”And knowing his friend, James knows it isn’t.
